Last year I was stuck in a bit of a job rut and felt as though I really needed to start pushing myself.
With no room to grow in my position I thought it was about time I started looking for something that would help me flourish.
My blog has always managed to gain me some incredible opportunities so I thought that using it as tool to gain a new career would be ideal.
Everything I’ve learnt through blogging I could put into action into my new career, and like an extension to my CV, my blog would help my future employer know what I’m all about.
As I know many people will be looking for a new job in 2015 I thought I would share with you the steps I took to bagging my dream job, all with the help of my little blog.
Do Your Research
Although I’d signed up to a few recruitment agencies, it seems as though they’re still stuck in the dark ages when it comes to finding the perfect position, so I took it upon myself to do my own job search.
Rather than go through the usual Google search I decided to use more modern methods.
Looking on twitter under various hashtags and through Facebook helped me to stumble across a few roles up for grabs.
I also looked on company websites that I thought would be cool to work with, even some big brand names.
Just spending an hour a day using different resources helped me find places that the traditional recruitment agencies would never have even thought of.
Get Talking
After I’d found companies I had an interest in I started to do a little social stalking.
You can find out so much about a company from their social sites.
So once I felt that a company had a good approach to their employees and customers, I started to get involved with their twitter conversations.
This is a great way to start getting yourself noticed and to find common ground with any future colleagues. It’s a little trick I learnt from this article, which tells you how to get an interview with anyone!
Impress Their Socks Off
I came to realise in my job search that everyone sends emails.
And even as someone without a huge blog inboxes can become a nightmare to keep on top of.
So knowing that I didn’t want my email to just become another number I decided to take matters into my hands and invest in a little self-promotion.
Polishing up my CV, I popped it into a neon orange envelope a long with a packet of sweets, and a USB stick like this one, filled with some pieces of works as well as articles from my blog.
It might have cost me a small penny, but if I was going to set myself apart I had to make an impact and separate myself from the usual suspects.
Get Bloggy With It
Once I’d done all I could to lay the groundwork of my future career, I started posting more regularly on my blog with articles that my future employer might find relevant.
Promoting it through all of my social channels and even tagging the company in my post meant they’d have an instant notification of my article.
Having a blog has never been more beneficial than when you can use it to go into a new role that perhaps years ago, would have only been available to those with specific qualifications.
If there’s a job you’re longing to get into utilise your blog and show them what you can do.

Organising a Christmas party is no easy feat. To be fair, organising any party isn’t easy unless you’re the queen of planning and revel in the responsibility. Christmas is full of parties and plans for all the family and if you’ve been put in charge of planning an unforgettable Christmas do, for friends, family or workmates, there are plenty of tips floating around that will help to keep your ideas on track. While it may be tempting to ask for help from party planning professionals, it’s not impossible to do it yourself – much cheaper that way and, for many people, much more fun! Here are some great tips to help you get started:

Book Early

Christmas is a hectic time, with many calendars full to the brim by the time Christmas Eve arrives. Book early and not only will you be able to secure your venue of choice, but you will also be able to give plenty of notice to guests so that they can organise their home life to coincide. Many people will need to find a babysitter, or will need to ensure their other half isn’t also busy. Give them ample time to ensure they can make it.

Provide a Theme or Dress Code

If you have a clear idea of what you want in your mind, provide information to the guests so that they can go along with it. If there’s a dress code at the venue you’ve booked, let people know. For example, some clubs don’t allow trainers, while a casino may be a little stringent about what counts as ‘smart’ dress. Luckily for you, if your guests don’t have something to wear, they can often pick up a great value suit or amazing dress with ease, if you give them the time to do it!

Plan the Guest List

You need to have a concise list of who is invited; it’d be awful if you missed someone off the list, wouldn’t it? This can get a little messy when it comes to work parties – is it just the staff that is invited? Or are you planning to ask any clients or suppliers? Inviting clients can be fabulous for positive PR, but you also need to make sure that your staff stay on their best behaviour, too, else things could get messy.

Is there a Budget?

Set a maximum spend per head before you book anything so that you know exactly what you, or the company, can afford. If it’s a work do, the company often foot the bill although sometimes, it’s feasible to ask for a little donation towards a ticket - mainly so that you don’t waste money on people not turning up. If you’re organising a party for friends, give them a heads up and ask them to transfer you their contribution in advance so that you don’t have to book things out of your own pocket.

With so many choices on offer, from theme nights to a swanky restaurant meal, you need to decide what is best for the party you’re planning. Consider entertainment, food, drink and how long the party is going to go on for. Most of all, enjoy it and be proud when it all comes together!

The Art of Purse Shopping

I have found out in all my years of shopping that purse shopping seems to give women the most trouble. Oh, I know there is always trouble when it comes to fitting dresses, pants, and tops as well, especially if you do not have the model perfect shape that most clothes seem to be made for. But purses pose a major problem for most women. Not that it isn’t easy to see a purse you love but then to when you get it home is it practical? Every woman is different in their purse needs as far as size, pockets, and organization.

Purse shopping can be very difficult. Even if you go to the store and pick out a purse it is a hard task. Unless you are the type of person who buys essentially the same type of purse every time, just in a different shade, and then that is dependent upon whether they continue to make your purse every year which I doubt.

The way I purse shop is first I go through and see what catches my eye and if it is generally in the right size category then I pick it up and look at the latch or zipper to see if it is going to stay closed no matter what I stuff into it. Then I check and see if it has the right amount of pockets inside and if there is at least one with a zipper to keep things from slinging around inside the purse. If I am still intrigued with the purse I have even gone as far as to take everything out of my purse and put it into the purse in question to see how everything will fit!

On my part, I always run the risk of getting a purse too big instead of too small. I know I can not manage with a purse that will not take all my necessities, and there are a lot of necessities believe me, but I also can not manage a purse that holds too much. I am a bit of a hoarder when it comes to purse contents. There are things I need and things that I may need. There are things that collect and things that others want me to store for them while we are out and about. If I am with children there are even toys. The bigger the purse the more requests to carry and the heavier and harder it gets. You also run the risk of the bottomless purse. Does anyone else out there ever feel like Mary Poppins with her magic bottomless bag? I know people sometimes watch me to see if I’m going to pull out a hat stand or something while waiting for me to find something in the bottom of my purse!

Hey, I have had literal nightmares about purses over the years. Because I have had many large purses and had a hard time finding things in them for embarrassingly long periods of time while waiting in line this has actually produced nightmares. You know, one of those running and not going anywhere nightmares onlyI am looking for something in my purse that is critical to my staying alive and I can never find it! Horrible dreams that I awake from promising myself to get a more manageable purse.

When you are young you can afford to be a little more impractical in your purse styles but as you get a little older (and hopefully wiser) like me you really need to think of practicality a little bit more than style. I would never leave out style completely but after many years of being the style queen and giving up ease of use I am resigned to the fact that I need to now look for the most practical purse with style. Is that too much to hope for in a purse? I say not, but those purse manufacturers out there (who hopefully all have a woman advisor on their team) sure do need to carry around those stylish purses for awhile before they send them out into the world.

A guide to having clear and radiant skin
Similar to our eyes, our skin is one of the first things people notice about us. Having flawless radiant skin that exudes health, youthfulness and vitality, is the key to looking and feeling great. Whilst much of our skin’s appearance stems from our genes, a huge percentage of our skin’s condition is controlled by external factors.
The good news is that by taking a few simple steps the overall look and feel of your skin can be significantly enhanced – here’s how:
Drink plenty of water Body care is not just surface deep and what we put inside our body is equally as important as the products we apply to the outside.
One of the best ways to achieve clear and radiant skin is to drink plenty of water. Water clears the body of harmful toxins which can have damaging effects on your skin. Whilst it won’t happen overnight, many people insist that after spending a few days drinking the recommended eight glasses of water a day their skin appears clearer and more radiant.
Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables
Consuming the recommended five pieces of fruit and vegetables a day can help ensure you have clear and radiant skin. This is because fruit and vegetables are packed with antioxidants which fight against free radicals, help control acne and prevent the onset of fine lines and wrinkles.
Give up smoking
Smoking plays havoc with your skin and can mean smokers as young as 30 have a ravaged complexion that is well beyond its years. In reducing the blood flow to the lower layer of skin, smoking means less oxygen is delivered to the skin and the result is a sallow and unhealthy complexion.
The good news is that as soon as you give up smoking your skin will start to repair itself and begin to look clearer and more radiant – just another incentive to kick this bad habit.
Cleanse, tone and moisturise
For a great complexion and flawless skin, it’s important that you cleanse, tone and moisturise daily. Ensure you choose cosmetic products that are specifically designed for your skin type. To begin your routine, cleanse your face thoroughly to remove any traces of dirt. After cleansing, use a toner to remove any excess grease and create a more even skin tone. Eat To Live Or Live To Eat?

According to some recent research, nearly 60% of 18–25-year-olds leave home without being able to cook five simple dishes: a statistic that realistically isn’t all that surprising.

Much is made these days of the inability of our youth to demonstrate many fundamental home-style skills. It’s almost as though we expect them to be fully accomplished keepers of house and home in the manner of adults with much tried and tested experience. It’s not the lack of skills behind the outcry that is objectionable, but rather the sentiment.

However, proficiency in this skill-set is important and it is desirable for both parents and schools to help instil it. Whether cookery classes should constitute part of the school curriculum is, after all, a much-debated point. This cause is championed in some political fields as being a solution to obesity in adulthood – a theory that has had many a celebrity chef clogging up the airwaves as they proclaim that we’re all condemned to a life of convenience food and cholesterol.

Whether the problem is that our children don’t know the difference between a crisp and a carrot is debateable. Perhaps they just prefer the taste of one to the other.

While being a little bit useless on the home economics front isn’t something to be applauded particularly, let’s face it – the ability to accomplish a repertoire of five dishes is not the be-all and end-all. It certainly isn’t the end of the world if that particular box isn’t ticked by the age of 25.

There’s every chance that these accomplishments will come easily at a later date. A burgeoning desire to cook is almost a rite of passage for the 30-something after all. While your late teens and early 20s are all about working hard and playing hard, your 30s seem to be the time to embrace homemaking. After all, priorities change as we get older and, however unwisely, chances are that when we’re in our 20s our priorities do not include sourcing and producing healthy, balanced meals.

Most teenagers are bundled off to university, disdainfully agreeing to take the ubiquitous box of mother’s cast-off Tefal cookware, while doubting that they’ll actually use it much.

For many this is the ‘sink or swim’ moment and not all youngsters finish their education with fewer home skills than they started with. In fact, those desperate to shake off the reputation that young people don’t cook could even surprise you by returning with more cooking ideas under their belts than you have – just don’t be surprised if some of them involve pot noodles!

Eyeliners for Summer!

Okay, so I know “summer” hasn’t gotten off to the best start for most of us this year, but there is still hope!? If the sun does decide to make an appearance then it is nice to play around with makeup and jazz things up some days. One thing I like to do in summer is where bright eyeliners, usually with neutral eye shadows. It adds a pop of colour without being “too much”, no?!

With eyeliners, I like using two different types - one is the liquid liner type, because it tends to be really long wearing and most of the time waterproof, so if you are lucky enough to see a pool or some sea then that is always a good option!

The second type of liner I like is a pencil, for the waterline, or on the lid, smoked out. Today I am focusing on just using a pencil for your waterline.

I do of course use gel eyeliners too, but in the summer, for some reason I reach for my liquid liners more often, not quite sure why!

Here is a selection of my favourite liquid liners at the moment:

Boots No 7 – Stay Perfect Eyeliner – Jewel – a beautiful turquoise - £8.75 (don’t forget Boots often do the £5.00 off vouchers!)

Milani Infinite Liquid Liner in Infinite – bright cobalt blue – around $7 or £4 where sold in the UK.

Milani Infinite Liquid Liner in Forever – a lovely bronze – around $7 or £4 where sold in the UK.

Milani Infinite Liquid Liner in Eternal – a gorgeous light green - around $7 or £4 where sold in the UK.

KIKO Cosmetics Definition Waterproof Liquid Liner – 06 – a medium purple – Normally £8.50 but on sale now for £3.90!

GOSH Extreme Art Eye Liner – Waterproof – 15 – a purple/pink shade - £6.49.

As you can see the colours are gorgeous! All of the liners above have really good wear, are easy to apply and are waterproof. Out of the lot the No 7 probably performs the best – it wears for at least 24 hours (if you just happened to sleep with it on, it would be fine the next day, trust me – its been tested!!). The Milani liners come a close second, they are amazing!

I tend to only wear them on my lid, and not on the waterline….which brings me to my favourite pencils for summer…..

As you can see, I really like my Bourjois pencils! But, that is because they are reasonably priced, perform really well without tugging, last for a really long time on the waterline (these normally last for around 8 hours on my waterline!) and they come in gorgeous shades!

Sizzling Swimwear for Women and Men:

Hey all!

I am so excited to do this post for ye all today. I love guest posts so when Annabel said she was looking for bloggers I emailed her straight away to lend a hand :)

I decided to go for both my top 5 summer nail polishes and at the same time I incorporated them into my favourite summer nail art by free handing the tips! Hope ye all enjoy it!

1)So to start of this manicure I would recommend using a base coat. I have one coat of Stargazer 114 as my base coat

2) Pick a sheer polish to use as a base colour. I went for Essence Toffee to go from their Nude Glam collection.

 One coat of Toffee to go:

I put on another coat as it looked a bit too streaky for my liking.

**Quick tip: If your base colour is opaque and you can't see your tips anymore, hold your hand up to the light and you will see your tips! No fear of having to start all over again**

3)For my Index finger I went for one of my all time favourite polishes. This is Barry m Berry Ice cream, the perfect lilac polish. This needed three coats to become perfectly opaque but you can get away with two. It dries fairly quickly so no worries about smudging. 

4)On my middle finger I chose Catrice Salmon and Garfunkel. This is a peach colour that is opaque in 3 coats.Peach is perfect for summer and spring and really brightens up your entire outfit!

5)I used Catrice Meet me at coral island for the tip on my ring finger. I love this colour! It's coral but it leans slightly more towards pink.It's almost neon and it is just amazing. This is almost opaque in one coat. I mainly use this for pedicures but it makes a really bright and fun manicure. 

6)I think minty blue is a gorgeous colour so I picked out Catrice Sold out forever (the new version) for my pinky finger. I didn't think this polish would really suit my skin tone but it works! This is opaque in 2 coats.

7)Finally on my thumb I went for Catrice Birdy reloaded! Yellow polish tends to scare most people off,especially one as bright as this, but when used for tips it is fun without being too bright and daunting.

Here is how my manicure turned out:

I really like the way it turned out especially as it was my first attempt at free-handing the tips. I would suggest using the side of the brush when doing the tips. I used the top of the brush which made the lines a bit harder to perfect. I am delighted with the look of it though. Annie, being such a fabby girl, took a peek at my blog and gave me a topic she thought I might have something to say about.  So, what's the topic then?  You can't handle the suspense anymore, right?

What My View Of Beauty Is

Well, I have to admit this prompt took a fair amount of thinking over.  As I write this, I'm still thinking about it... what is my view of beauty?!?  Certainly, it's easier for me to determine what my view of beauty isn't.  But, that wasn't the question at all, was it.... Hmm....

To me, beauty is a lot of things.  A great pair of shoes, a great hair day, a compliment from a total stranger.  But a lot of those things are superficial, aren't they?  I mean, it's certainly easy to feel beautiful when people tell you that you are.  When the make-up counter girl finds your perfect shade, when you finally save up enough money for those shoes you've been lusting after for weeks and they look amazing.  

But, more then any of those things, I think beauty is confidence in yourself.  Admittedly, I'm usually lacking in the self-confidence department... Oh, I have my days when I think I'm looking pretty foxy.  But mostly, I feel like I just only look alright.  But, I have a pretty tremendous amount of confidence in my abilities.  I bet if I could look at myself doing some of my favorite activities, I'd get a totally different set of reinforcements to my persona.  

Beauty is good posture & scented body lotion.  A great perfume & someone telling you that you did a good job at work.  A smashing summer nail color & an unexpected surprise in the mail box.  Beauty is deep belly laughs with your best friend & messy sobs when bad news comes.  

So that's my view of beauty.  It's so much more then a great outfit or a perfect face.  More then attitude and positive reinforcement....but I can't quite put my finger on what it is exactly...

P.S. I googled "pictures of beauty" and all I got were pages & pages of images of perfect, flawless faces.  Somehow, I just can't agree with that...

Hi guys!

I'm Clare and I've very recently started my blog - xunderscoreclaree.

A bit about me first I suppose. I'm 22 years old, live in Glasgow and have a ridiculous amount of things going on right now that I'm not even sure why I thought I could fit in blogging! I work full time in an office, I study Accountancy part time, I'm getting married in 10 weeks (9 weeks and 6 days!) and I have a season ticket for the football. I'm a busy bee!

I find that because of all of the above, I don't really get much time to do fun things or talk to people about stuff that I'm really interested in, so the blog seemed like a really good idea.

Why blog? I started reading blogs on and off since I worked with Karrisx and followed her on twitter. A whole new world was opened to me, I had no idea there was a bbloggers commmunity or youtube community or anything like that - and to be honest, I loved it from day one! I alway had a livejournal/greatestjournal when I was a teenager and I've now found a grown up version of that!

Products, products, products! I have a fairly huge obsession at the moment with my nails. I never used to. One time when I was feeling a bit down I decided to go get my nails done, I'd never had them before and I was just discovering beauty products & services. Unfortunately, I totally ruined it for myself  by going to the best technician in Glasgow (in my opinion, of course). I've been to a few others on short notice now and they've never matched up - so it's either Ania or nothing! I'm not sure why I love my nails - they make it incredibly difficult to type at work and they're not the easiest to maintain but I've always had short fingers, and the nails make me a hell of a lot more confident about my hands - is that weird?!

I absolutely love reading other blogs. I try to watch some youtube videos as well but I don't really have the time. I can read blogs on the bus/on my lunch hour etc but youtube is just slightly more difficult. Some of my favourites, and I'm sure they won't mind me mentioning them, are Three Little Buhos - the confidence and style of this girl is to die for! You all know that of course, if you're reading this, Karrisx (of course), Through Chelsea's Eyes, Ace Stace Beauty, Essiebutton and Lips Like Sugar. I could go on and on, I follow 107 blogs and honestly, I read and enjoy them all. Check them out!

It's difficult to pinpoint what I like about a blog. Nice clean reviews are great, I've read some where I get to the end and I'm still not sure whether they like the product or not. Nail art - I love nail art, I'm so envious. FOTD posts. I don't think I'll ever have the confidence to post a FOTD blog. The number of beauty bloggers on here that are absolutely amazingly beautiful is ridiculous! You're lucky I don't go Samantha Brick on your ass.

There's really only two things I can think of that I dislike about blogging.

1) Word verification. Urgh, please turn it off! It's so difficult when I'm trying to comment from my phone

2) "Follow me and I'll follow you back". I got a comment like this the other day. Now, I checked out the blog anyway and I probably followed but it got my back up slightly that they wanted ME to follow first. If you like my blog, follow. If you don't, then don't. As a new blogger, I love seeing my follow count increase - but not through default!

I started my blog with very low hopes, I thought it'd be somewhere that I could write some stuff but read more of others. I've since found the community to be so amazing I'm hoping it's a kinda mutual thing where people look forward to my blogs as much as I look forward to theirs =]
